3 types of Assessment tools

Nurses’ skills level assessment tool

The Frenetti Assessment for Nurses’ Professional Performance (FAN) is a self-assessment tool to measure nurses’ skills and expertise level from beginner, competent, proficient to expert and needs or ambitions. It is specific developed for nurses working in a variety of roles, such as general, specialized, senior, coordinated nurses and nurse practitioners. Both, for vocational and bachelor educated nurses. This type of assessment is also tailor-made for other professional groups. Learn more about this Professional Performance Assessment here.

Staffing mix

Use the Nurses’ Professional Performance Assessment together with the tailor-made Professional Performance Assessments for other professional groups. Such as, caregivers, care assistants, facility assistants, occupational therapists, etc. to achieve the optimal staffing mix.

Nursing Workload Measurement tool

The Workload Assessment for Nurses (WAN) measures nurses’ workload on a number of themes (i.e., rubrics) from low, medium, high to intensive workload. The results at rubric and item level show what the workload is per theme, for the professional and the team. Learn more about this Workload Assessment here.

Nursing workload management

The degree of workload determines which level of performance in one or more components fits best. The WAN in combination with the FAN can predict sick leave or burn-out when the expertise/ skills level is lower then nurses’ perceived workload to take targeted action for prevention. This type of assessment can also be tailor-made for other professional groups.

Work- and Learning Environment Assessment tool

This Work-Learning Environment assessment measures the work-learning culture or climate at individual and team level. Questions asked are about the perspective of the employee and student on the working and learning environment. The items and rubrics from this assessment all relate to factors that are necessary for a good work-learning environment. This is important for continuous professional development. In addition, the working and learning environment also affects the quality and safety of the work that is done. This assessment is generic. It can be used for both staff and students during an internship or work-learning period. Learn more about this Work- and Learning Environment Assessment here.

"What nurses do has never been documented in such detail as in the Professionalism in Nursing Performance Assessment."

What are the relationships?

A bottom-up approach to managing teams

Ask all professionals from their own context about the current level of competence and goals. Monitor this with the Professionalism Performance assessment. We measure the performance of professionals - from beginner to expert -to gain insight into the current situation and the goals of the professional. The results of this assessment can be used to take action with regard to learning and development.

With the help of the Complexity of Care assessment, the optimal capacity mix of a team can be managed. This gives the opportunity to put together balanced teams in consultation with each other to be able to deliver care 24/7.

The results of the Work-Learning Environment assessment indicate whether a favorable work-learning environment is present. It is a guideline for the development of an effective and good work-learning environment.

Use of one, two, or three Frenetti Assessments?

The three different assessments can be used independently or in combination with each other. When used together, this provides additional information to monitor and take action where necessary. The use of all three assessments provides the most optimal insight to determine what to do and what to work on.

The various graphs, which can be generated with the assessment scores, form a snapshot of the current situation, whereby the Professionalism Performance assessment and Work-Learning environment assessment also reflect the goals – professional ambition and organizational goals. The latter provides information in which direction a professional or team wants to develop. By asking all professionals, a bottom-up approach is created instead of a top-down approach, making change possible with support.

Monitoring, tracking trends, and action

With the use of one or more Frenetti assessments, you can discover whether there is a gap between the current and the desired situation. The result can be used for organizational development. The assessments - completed and updated by professionals - provide data regarding the situation at a certain time. This data can be systematically analyzed and examined. Various measurement moments generate data for monitoring and timely identification of trends. With the results of analyses and research, quick and purposeful action can be taken. Either on a small scale (informal and action-oriented), in project form, or within a program. The learning environment within the Frenetti platform facilitates further development from what has been learned into practice.

All assessments are scientifically validated and are the subject of ongoing scientific research.

Conceptual model

This conceptual model gives an overview of the ongoing collaborative research and monitoring at individual, team and organizational level, which in my humble opinion we need to do, national and international to take care for healthcare workers and students. - Freda Vasse, founder and director of Frenetti.
